1st October – Winter Tips!

Welcome to October! As the colder months set in, there are a few things that can be done in your home to keep it cosy and in good order during the winter months.

GuttersNow is a good time to check your gutters are clear from falling leaves and a build up of debris. Don’t forget to check the gutters are in a good state of repair whilst they are being cleaned. Any broken joints or sections can be fixed, the gutters cleared and you can be confident your gutters are doing their job ready for the wetter months.

Condensation; During the colder months you may find condensation around your windows, this left may turn to mildew and mould. Condensation is caused by everyday activities such as showering, cooking, drying clothes and even boiling your kettle and breathing. It is important, where possible to keep the property heated but also ventilated throughout the colder months. Make sure extractor fans are working and used whenever showering and cooking. If you do see any condensation or mould make sure you wipe it away as soon as possible to prevent any damage. It is suggested that an anti-mould and mildew remover is used, such as Dettol mould and mildew remover.

Radiators; As you start to feel a chill in the air you will feel the need to switch your heating back on. When this happens check the individual radiators to make sure they are fully heating up and that the thermostatic valves are turned up. If you find a radiator is only luke warm or not hot from top to bottom it may need bleeding. This can be easily done with a radiator key. This releasing any locked air from within allowing the radiator to full heat up and effectively warm your home.

Boiler; As your home starts to feel the chill of the darker mornings and colder nights your boiler gets a wake up call and some older boilers cannot quite keep up. Turn your heating on now and test your system. If you experience any issues do make your agent or landlord aware so any points can be rectified before winter sets in.

Heating; Whether you are going away or staying home during the winter months, make sure you keep your heating set to a low temperature. It is suggested the temperature is set between 18 to 20 degrees on your thermostat or heating controls. This will help regulate the temperature in your home and is more cost effective than turning your heating on and off when you feel you need it. It should also stop any pipes from freezing and bursting should an icy spell make an appearance.

Ventilation; It is important during the colder months to keep your property well ventilated. Make sure any trickle vents on the windows are open and any air vents are free from obstruction so they can do their job. Ensure windows are opened, where necessary, and extractor fans are being used.
